ALAEU Australian Labradoodle Breed standard

General Appearance

Must appear athletic and graceful with a compact body displaying substance with medium boning. Should not appear cloddy or heavy nor overly fine. They have a free flowing wavy or curly coat that does not shed and is allergy-friendly.

Temperament

Clever, friendly, sociable, comical, joyful, energetic when free and soft and quiet when handled. They should approach people in a happy friendly manner with eye to eye contact. Keen and easy to train. They should display an intuition about their family members or handler’s current emotional state or needs. Based on this intuition some Australian Labradoodles can be trained to become a service dog.

Sizes

There should be no appreciable difference in the general appearance of any of the three sizes except in the size difference.

  • Miniature range:
    Height: 35cm to 43cm (14 to 17 inches) at wither
    Weight: 7 kg to 13 kg
    The ideal size for the female is 35cm to 40cm (14 to 16 inches) and for the male is 37,5 cm to 43 cm (15 to 17 inches)
  • Medium range:
    Height: 43cm to 53cm (17 to 21 inches) at wither
    Weight: 13 kg to 20 kg
    The ideal size for the female is 43 cm to 47,5 cm (17 to19 inches) and for the male is 45 cm to 53 cm (18 to 21 inches)
  • Standard range:
    Height: 53 cm to 63 cm (21 to 25 inchesat wither
    Weight: 20 kg tot 28 kg
    The ideal size for the female is 53 cm to 57,5 cm (21 to 23 inches) and for the male is 55 cm to 63 cm (22 to 25 inches)

Head

Moderately broad with well-defined eyebrows. Stop should be moderate with eyes set well apart. The head should be of moderate width; developed but without exaggeration. Foreface to appear shorter than skull. The head should be clean-cut and free from fleshy cheeks. The whole head must be in proportion to the size of the dog. Skull should be slightly rounded but not domed. Forehead medium breadth, muzzle not snipey, but should have depth and breadth. The head should flow naturally into a strong slightly curved and muscular neck and not appear to be ‘stuck on’. The head should be fully coated as on the body, legs and tail.

Eyes

Wide set, Large, expressive and slightly rounded.Wide round or narrow shaped eyes are less desirable.
Eye colors can be darkest brown, a transparent honey color, or shades of hazel/

Ears

Set slightly above eye level and should lay flat against head in proportion with the skull with a slight lift at the base for air flow. Leather should be of medium thickness, and leather should not hang below the lower lip line.

Mouth

Must be a scissor bite. Upper teeth to just overlap the bottom teeth. A complete set of teeth of an adult Australian Labradoodle consists of 42 teeth.

Nose

Should be large, of square appearance and fleshy. Not narrow, pinched or pointed.

Neck

Well proportioned of good strength, moderately long lending an air of elegance, slightly arched and flow into shoulders with no appearance of abruptness.

Forequartes

Shoulders blades and upperarms to be the same length, and shoulders should be well laid back. Elbows are set close to the body. Forelegs to be straight when viewed from the front.

Body

Height (to wither) as to length (from sternum to point of buttock) should appear square and compact. Well sprung. Loins should be strong and muscular.
Level top line, strong over loins and slightly sloping croup and with sloping shoulders flowing into firm elbows and front legs straight to the ground. Stifles should have medium angulation and be long, with short strong hocks parallel and straight to the ground. They are a galloping dog, so flanks should rise to a medium tuck up, from a deep brisket and well sprung but not barreled ribs.

Hindquartes

In profile the croup is nearly flat, slight sloping of the croup is acceptable. Stifles should be moderately turned to propel forward movement, and hindquarters well muscled for power in movement. Hock to heel should be strong and short being perpendicular to the ground. View from the rear should be parallel to each other

Feet

The feet are of medium size, round with well-arched toes having elastic and thick pads. The feet should not turn in or out. The breed is born without hind dewclaws.

Tail

A sabel shaped tail. The tail should follow the topline in repose or when in motion. It may be carried gaily.

Movement

Trotting gait is effortless, smooth, powerful and coordinated in mature dogs. Should have a good reach in front and drive from behind for forward motion. Sound free movement and a light gait are essential. When viewed from the front or rear, the legs turn neither in or out. When galloping, they should appear to float almost above the ground. Light and airy, flowing and free moving with a complete absence of apparent effort.

Coat

A distinctive feature of this breed is that the coat is non-shedding and does not have any doggy odor. The coat is allergy friendly to the vast majority of persons with dog related allergies. The coat should be even over the entire body. It should be straight, wavy or forming spirals It should be a single coat. Can range between a fleece to wool in texture. The Fleece textured coat is a soft texture as in the Angora goat. It can either have a straight wavy look or a soft spiralling curl look.
The Wool textured coat is like a lamb’s wool in texture. It should have the appearance of looser spiralling wool, which opens up easily to the skin.

Faults

  • Character:
    Any sign of aggression or dominance. Fearful, timid, yappy or highly-strung temperaments
  • Body:
    • Short or overly thick neck
    • Long Back
    • Toeing in or out is a fault
    • Excessively short front limbs
    • Straight upright shoulders are a fault as are straight stifles
    • Monorchid or inverted vulva
    • Cow hocks are a fault as are toes turning either inwards or outwards
    • Over or under sized
  • Movement: Bad carriage or heavy gait.
  • Head:
    • Weak underjaw is a fault
    • A long narrow (poodle head) or block head
    • Protruding or sunken eyes
    • Watery or tearful eyes
    • Crowding teeth
    • Canines must not point into the uppergums
    • Over or undershot or pincer mouth
    • Excessive hair in the ear canal is undesirable
  • Tail:
    Tail should not curl completely over the back. Tip of tail should not touch the back nor curl upon itself.
    (= Possum type or Teapot handle tails).
  • Coat:
    The coat should not be too thick or dense or tightly curled, nor should it be fluffy or fuzzy. Any sign of an undercoat is a serious fault. Extremely harsh hair is highly undesirable.  It should not shed. Improper coat, like flatcoated retrievers.
  • Colour: albinism and merle.
  • Feet: Rear dewclaws.
